Recording Industry Intensifies Legal Actions
The recording industry has escalated its fight against unauthorized, AI-generated music by filing lawsuits against two leading services, Suno and Udio. The complaints emphasize that Suno and Udio copied extensive amounts of sound recordings without proper permissions, thereby violating copyright laws.

The suits, spearheaded by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and representing major labels like Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Records, allege that these companies unlawfully exploited copyrighted sound recordings to train their AI-powered text-to-music models.
AI Music Generation Under Fire
According to the lawsuits, AI music generation services like Suno and Udio operate by ingesting large datasets of popular music to produce new outputs that mimic human sound recordings. This method is argued to not only infringe on copyright but also risk flooding the market with AI-generated music, potentially overshadowing genuine human creations. The legal actions seek court declarations of infringement, injunctions to prevent further violations, and financial damages for past infringements.
Music Community’s Stance on AI
RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier has stated that while the music community is open to working with responsible AI developers, unlicensed services pose a significant threat to human creativity. “The music community has embraced AI and is already collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity,” Glazier said. “However, services like Suno and Udio that exploit an artist’s work without consent or compensation undermine the potential of genuinely innovative AI for everyone.”
