Biography and Career

Maurits Jan Westveen was born in Amsterdam and raised in a musical household. He learned piano, guitar, and drums at a young age, which gave him a strong understanding of music. By his early teens, he was drawn to electronic music and began producing tracks on his own.

In 2014, he launched his career as Maurice West, releasing energetic big-room tracks that found support from top labels like Armada and Spinnin’. His remixes for artists such as Tiësto and Headhunterz earned industry recognition, along with festival appearances included Tomorrowland and Sziget. While he built a solid reputation, he later revealed he did not enjoy creating big-room house and struggled with the artistic limitations of the style.

Seeking authenticity, Westveen retired the Maurice West alias in 2022 and reemerged as Mau P. His debut single, “Drugs from Amsterdam,” released on Repopulate Mars in August 2022, was an immediate success. The track hit No. 1 on Beatport’s overall chart and was included in Billboard’s list of the year’s best dance songs.

Following his breakthrough, Mau P released a series of well-received singles including “Gimme That Bounce,” “Metro” with Kevin de Vries, and “Dress Code,” each earning strong Beatport placements and millions of streams. By 2023, he had won Breakout Artist and Global Breakthrough awards, along with multiple honors from the Electronic Dance Music Awards. His Spotify presence now exceeds 7 million monthly listeners, with “Drugs from Amsterdam” alone surpassing 200 million streams.
