Spotify, Apple, & Amazon Music Are Fighting to Acquire Sonos
Spotify and Amazon Lead Speculation as Potential Buyers of the Premium Audio Brand
Speculation is growing around a potential acquisition of Sonos, following significant leadership changes and a sharp decline in market value. Once valued at over $5 billion during the pandemic, the company’s market capitalization has fallen to $1.7 billion, putting it in a vulnerable position. The recent departures of CEO Patrick Spence and Chief Product Officer Maxime Bouvat-Merlin have only added fuel to rumors of a potential buyout.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Spotify and Amazon are the leading candidates to acquire Sonos. Amazon is seen as “the most natural fit,” especially with the recent appointment of Panos Panay, a former Microsoft executive, to lead Amazon’s hardware division. Adding Sonos to its portfolio would enhance Amazon’s Echo lineup with high-end audio technology. However, regulatory hurdles—similar to those faced during Amazon’s attempted acquisition of iRobot—could complicate the process.
On the other hand, Spotify, as a European company, might face fewer regulatory obstacles. Acquiring Sonos would give Spotify an immediate foothold in the hardware market, an area it has long sought to enter. While Spotify previously launched its own device, the Car Thing, it was discontinued due to low demand. Acquiring an established brand like Sonos could help Spotify avoid such pitfalls in the future.
Other companies, including Samsung Electronics and Roku, are also being considered as potential buyers. Samsung could use Sonos to strengthen its home audio offerings, while Roku might explore a stock-based acquisition given its limited cash reserves. However, larger tech companies like Apple, Google, and Meta are considered unlikely suitors due to their existing strategies and past relationships with Sonos.
As Sonos navigates this uncertain period, an acquisition could reshape the premium audio market, creating new opportunities for the company’s innovative products to reach a wider audience.
